Peter Herkenrath

Peter Herkenrath (1900 - 1992) was a German painter. After the Second World War, he was an important representative of abstract art. The special thing about Herkenrath's painting is the independent position within the German Informel of the 1950s and 1960s. From figurative and post-cubist painting of the 1930s, he came to abstract painting from the mid-1940s. He painted pictures that he called "structures" and "wall pictures", in which he applied thick layers of paint in relief with spatulas and brushes.
