ABOUT THE WORK Wilhelm von Kaulbach's The Destruction of Jerusalem by Titus was created in 1846 and the painting is in Neue Pinakothek München. The original size of the work is 585 x 705 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Wilhelm von Kaulbach's monumental painting depicts the siege and destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in 70 AD. The city's sanctuary is ablaze, and the altar is being captured by the conquerors. Kaulbach depicts the distress and despair in the long-besieged city in dramatic detail. The artist had a brochure printed in 1840 to interpret the subject matter. According to this pamphlet, the painting is essentially based on texts by the prophets, who, enthroned on clouds, display their books containing warnings, and on the account of Josephus Flavius, which he gave as a witness to the conquest and destruction of Jerusalem. Kaulbach drew important inspiration from Joseph Görres' Munich lectures on universal history. Accordingly, Kaulbach reinterpreted the historical event as a religious and cultural turning point in human history: while on the left, according to Kaulbach's tendentious interpretation, the "Eternal Jew," the "representative of contemporary Judaism," is being driven out by the Furies, on the right, in the style of a flight to Egypt, a Christian family, protected by angels and carrying a shining chalice, leaves the sinking city. The Artist: Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805 – 1874) was a German painter, noted mainly as a muralist, but also as a book illustrator. His murals decorate buildings in Munich. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting.
