ABOUT THE WORK Post Impressionist Painter Vincent van Gogh's View of Arles Flowering Orchards was created in 1889 and the painting is in Neue Pinakothek München. The original size of the work is 73,5 x 92,5 cm and is made of oil on canvas. This painting, created in the spring of 1889 and painted in light, luminous colors, shows the city on the horizon and the gardens in front, their trees and shrubs in lush bloom. Here, as so often, van Gogh depicted the landscape as a rich natural environment belonging to mankind, nurtured by it. The city, a place of human community, is surrounded by a truly paradisiacal garden. The artist is certainly capable of depicting this beautiful, happy state, but through the water and, above all, the "lattice" of poplar trunks with their bare shoots, he also makes us understand that access to such a paradise is denied him, has been denied him. It had been barely a year earlier, in May 1888, since he had painted another view of Arles—amidst meadows full of yellow and purple flowers—a Japanese dream. This dream had been destroyed primarily by the onset of the nervous illness and the subsequent attacks, against which the artist had to repeatedly defend himself. The bright palette and the detailed brushwork show the influence of the Impressionists, but none of these artists - like van Gogh - related the depiction of nature to humanity in such a comprehensive and serious way. The Artist: Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.
