ABOUT THIS PIECE Tonalist Painter Thomas Wilmer Dewing's Music was created in 1895 and the painting is in Smithsonian American Art Museum. The original size of the work is 108 x 91,4 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Like many nineteenth-century artists, Dewing equated art with music. Through composition, color, and paint handling he evoked musical "harmonies." This connection reverberated in many aspects of his life; the critic Royal Cortissoz related that, when visiting Dewing, he "used to be charmed by the harp on the door which gave forth delicate music as the door was open and shut. That is what characterizes his art, an exquisite music." To emphasize the idea of musical sounds through visual representation, Dewing intentionally left this image sketchy, suggestive, open to imaginative interpretation. Concerned with surface patterns, he posed the figure at right with the curvilinear grace of a personified G clef. Seated, plucking a mandolin, her companion draws forth caressing notes from the elongated instrument. Delicate, subtle shades evoke musical tonalities. The Artist: Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851 - 1938) was an American painter working at the turn of the 20th century. Schooled in Paris, Dewing was noted for his figure paintings of aristocratic women.
