ABOUT THIS PIECE Hudson River School Painter Thomas Cole's Expulsion Moon and Firelight was created in 1828 and the painting is in Thyssen Bornemisza Museum Madrid. The original size of the work is 91,3 x 121,9 cm and is made of oil on canvas. The composition is symmetrically structured around the cross shape created by the waterfall and bridge. On the right is Paradise and on the left the world after the Fall. The pronounced contrast between the glowing light inside the arch and the shadow around it emphasises the sublime character of the scene. Cole feared the effects of the rapid industrialisation of the United States and here depicts the North American landscape as a metaphor of Eden. The Artist: Thomas Cole (1801 – 1848) was an English-born American painter known for his landscape and history paintings.
