ABOUT THE WORK

The Portuguese by Georges Braque was created in 1911 - 1912 and is in Kunstmuseum Basel. The size of the work is 116,7 x 81,5 cm and is made of oil on canvas. The painting was created between autumn 1911 and spring 1912 in Céret and Paris. According to Braque himself, he was inspired to create this work by a Portuguese musician he saw in a bar in Marseille. In "Le Portugais," Braque integrates stenciled letters and numbers into the picture plane for the first time; these are not tied to any recognizable pictorial element and stand autonomously. The letters "D BAL" are presumably derived from a poster advertising a "Grand Bal." The Artist: Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were in his alliance with Fauvism from 1905, and the role he played in the development of Cubism.
