ABOUT THIS PIECE Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's Preparations For The Festivities was created in 1866 and is in Clark Art Institute Williamstown. The size of the work is 54 x 69,2 cm and is made of oil on canvas. A man converses with a woman as she threads a garland of flowers. Two servants—one veiled by a fabric screen on the left—decorate the Pompeian interior for a celebration. The setting is filled with archaeological details, including a marble fountain with a lion’s-head spout and bronze, animal-shaped cups. Scenes like this helped establish Alma-Tadema’s reputation as a painter of life in the ancient world. The Artist: Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836 - 1912) was a Dutch painter who later settled in the United Kingdom, becoming the last officially recognised denizen in 1873. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there.
