ABOUT THE WORK Rembrandt van Rijn's The Abduction of Proserpina was created in 1631 and is in Gemäldegalerie Berlin. The size of the work is 84,4 x 79,5 cm and is made of oil on wood. As related in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Pluto, ruler of the underworld, pierced by Cupid’s arrows, was inflamed with love of Proserpina, the daughter of Ceres. When he saw her playing and picking flowers with her companions, he was filled with ardent desire. He grabbed her and abducted her in his chariot to the gloomy realms of the underworld. Proserpina’s mother Ceres then set out in vain to search for her vanished daughter, until she was able to persuade Jupiter to let Proserpina spend eight months of the year with her on earth and four months of the year in the underworld with Pluto. In the Berlin painting, Rembrandt portrayed the dramatic climax of the story. While her companions unavailingly try to keep hold of her cloak, Proserpina, fighting and screaming in desperation, scratches the face of her abductor. Here Rembrandt kept to the ancient version of the story with astounding precision, right down to details such as Proserpina’s basket of flowers and the dark horses of Pluto’s chariot. This subject was very rarely depicted in Dutch painting, however, and hardly any artist followed the example of Rembrandt’s version. The reason for this may be that the work was probably held in the collection of Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik as early as 1632. The Artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669) was a Dutch draughtsman, painter, and printmaker. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history.
