ABOUT THE WORK Baroque Painter Rembrandt's Moses with the Ten Commandments was created in 1659 and the painting is in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. The original size of the work is 168,1 x 136,5 cm and is made of oil on canvas. For his late work of Moses, Rembrandt chose the type of three-quarter figure, depicted from below, slightly larger than life, positioned directly at the front edge of the picture, thus achieving a particularly expressive presence. This impression is further enhanced by the striking use of lighting. Moses raises the two tablets of the law, on which the Ten Commandments are inscribed in Hebrew. Framed by his raised arms and the dark stone slabs, his illuminated head marks the center of the composition. The much-discussed question of whether the image illustrates the moment of the destruction of the Tablets of the Law or the presentation of the new ones cannot be conclusively answered. However, as an early version of the image, no longer visible today, shows, the Tablets of the Law held aloft by Moses were initially positioned further back to the left – a position that clearly suggests the smashing of the Tablets. The correction to the tablets held upright above the head, on the other hand, points more to the presentation of the Tablets. This interpretation would also be consistent with Moses' facial expression, which seems to reflect concern rather than anger and rage. Furthermore, the fact that, according to the story, Moses' face "shone" after he received the Tablets of the Law from God for a second time and presented them to the people of Israel would also support such an interpretation. The Artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669) was a Dutch draughtsman, painter, and printmaker. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history.
