ABOUT THIS PIECE Quentin Massys' The Adoration of the Magi was made in 1526 and the original painting is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The original size of the work is 102,90 x 80 cm and is made of oil on canvas. The caricature-like features of the Magi and their retinue reveal the artist’s interest in the exaggerated physiognomic types popularized by Leonardo da Vinci and made available through prints. The highly individualized treatment of the African king reflects the presence of both free and enslaved Black people in Antwerp as a result of trade relations with Portugal. It was this interest in physiognomy that made Massys such a gifted portraitist. The Artist: Quentin Massys (1465 - 1530) was a Flemish painter in the Early Netherlandish tradition. He was active in Antwerp for over 20 years, creating numerous works with religious roots and satirical tendencies. He is regarded as the founder of the Antwerp school of painting, which became the leading school of painting in Flanders in the 16th century.
