ABOUT THIS PIECE Pompeo Batoni's Allegory of the Arts was created in 1740 and is in Stadelsches Kunstinstitut Frankfurt. The size of the work is 175,4 x 138cm and is made of oil on canvas. The painting shows five women who embody the arts. Painting is sitting by the easel at the centre of the composition. She has turned towards Poetry, who is standing behind and who provides her with inspiration. Sculpture is sitting at front left and gazes admiringly up at Painting. Architecture and Music have retreated into the background. The Roman artist Batoni also illustrates the supremacy of Painting within the arts with his refined, almost classical-looking style, which disguises every brushstroke. The Artist: Pompeo Batoni (1708 - 1787) was an Italian painter who displayed a solid technical knowledge in his portrait work and in his numerous allegorical and mythological pictures. He is considered a precursor of Neoclassicism.
