ABOUT THE WORK Peter Paul Rubens' The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt was created in 1616 and is in Alte Pinakothek München. The size of the work is 248,3 x 321,3 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Rubens was likely inspired to create this subject by his exploration of antiquity, as depictions of dramatic hunts were already very popular at that time. The realistic depiction of the hippopotamus likely originates from a taxidermied specimen exhibited in Rome in 1601. The painting is part of an originally four-part hunting cycle commissioned from Rubens by Elector Maximilian I for the Old Palace in Schleissheim. After being confiscated by Napoleonic troops, this was the only work to return to Munich. The Artist: Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640) was a Flemish artist and diplomat. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history.
