ABOUT THE WORK The Fall of The Damned by Peter Paul Rubens was created in 1621 and is in Alte Pinakothek Munchen. The original size of the work is 286 x 224 cm and is made of oil on wood. Unlike his depictions of the Last Judgment, Rubens focuses solely on the fall into hell, rendering it in a monumental format. The horror and inevitability of the event are masterfully captured: sinners, devil-like figures, and demonic hybrids coalesce into a diagonal line terminating in a vortex. This visualizes the pull of the fires of hell, described in the Gospel of Matthew (25:41). It doesn't take much imagination to imagine the terrified screams of the lost and the infernal noise. The Artist: Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640) was a Flemish artist and diplomat. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition.
