ABOUT THE WORK

The Iron Foundry Burmeister And Wain by Peder Severin Krøyer was created in 1885 and is in National Gallery of Denmark Copenhagen. The size of the work is 144 x 194 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In 1884, Peder Severin Krøyer was contacted by Burmeister & Wain (B&W), who wanted a depiction of the company. At this time, German and English painters had been providing industrial portraits since the mid-19th century. Krøyer had previously depicted the early fishing industry in the painting "A sardine factory in Concarneau" from 1879 (inv. no. KMS3108), but no Danish artist had previously depicted Danish industry on commission. In 1885, it had already been a few years since B&W had installed its iron foundry, and considerably larger ships could now be built and repaired. It is this emerging shipyard industry that we are presented with in the painting "From Burmeister & Wain's iron foundry". The hot iron sparkles in the casting process, and the glowing mass illuminates the many workers. In the middle, wearing a top hat, a factory manager is seen directing, while the chairman on the right follows the casting process. The Artist: Peder Severin Krøyer (1851 - 1909) was a Danish painter. In 1870 at the age of 19 completed his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. In 1882 spent June–October at Skagen, then a remote fishing village on the northern tip of Denmark, painting themes from local life, as well as depictions of the artistic community there.
