ABOUT THIS PIECE Michelangelo Caravaggio's Salome Receives The Head Of John The Baptist was created in 1609-10 and is in National Gallery London. The size of the work is 91,5 x 106,7 cm and is made of oil on canvas. This is a late work by Caravaggio, probably painted towards the end of his life. He has reduced the story to its essentials, focusing on the human tragedy and conveying the scene’s emotional power through a restricted range of colour, pronounced chiaroscuro and dramatic gesture. The brutish executioner places John’s head on a salver held by Salome, whose serious expression and sidelong glance are enigmatic. The Artist: Caravaggio (1571 - 1610) was an Italian painter active in Rome for most of his artistic life. His paintings combine a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting, which had a formative influence on Baroque painting.
