ABOUT THIS PIECE Ludolf Backhuysen's Rough Sea with a Dutch Yacht was created in 1694 and is in Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The size of the work is 37 x 46 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Originally from Emden in Germany, Ludolf Bakhuysen specialized in marine painting in Amsterdam. In this seascape he depicted various types of ships sailing on choppy water and under a dramatic cloudy sky. At the right is a yacht with a grand showing of the flag. Bakhuysen placed his signature on the fluttering flag. In the left foreground is a fisherman pulling his nets into a little boat. In the background is a warship lying at anchor that has just fired a salute. The Artist: Ludolf Backhuysen (1630 - 1708) was a German-born Dutch painter, draughtsman, calligrapher and printmaker. He was the leading Dutch painter of maritime subjects after Willem van de Velde the Elder and Younger left for England in 1672.
