ABOUT THE WORK Lucas Cranach's Venus was created in 1532 and the painting is in Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt. The original size of the work is 37,7 x 24,5 cm and is made of oil on wood. Cranach rarely depicted Venus as a solitary figure; she is usually accompanied by her son Cupid. On this small panel, however, the maternal role is omitted. Rather, the Olympian goddess uses her otherworldly beauty as a means of seducing the viewer, before whose eyes she appears to pause for a moment in a veiled dance. The setting for such an intimate relationship between painting and viewer would most likely have been the private ambience of the art cabinet of a humanistically educated collector. The Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 – 1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker in woodcut and engraving. He was court painter to the Electors of Saxony for most of his career, and is known for his portraits, both of German princes and those of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation, whose cause he embraced with enthusiasm.
