ABOUT THIS PIECE Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man was created in 1492 and the drawing is in Gallerie dell'Accademia Venice. The original size of the work is 34,3 x 24,5 cm and is made of pen and ink on paper. The drawing represents da Vinci's concept of the ideal human body proportions. Its inscription in a square and a circle comes from a description by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius in Book III of his treatise De architectura. Yet, as has been demonstrated, Leonardo did not represent Vitruvius's proportions of the limbs but rather included those he found himself after measuring male models in Milan. While the drawing is named after Vitruvius, some scholars today question the appropriateness of such a title, given that it was first used in the 1490s. The Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance whose areas of interest included science and invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography.
