ABOUT THIS PIECE Leonardo da Vinci's The Head of the Virgin in Three-Quarter View Facing Right was created in 1510 - 1513 and is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The size of the work is 20,3 x 15,6 cm and is made of black chalk, charcoal and red chalk on paper. The study for the head of the Virgin on the recto has sometimes been doubted by scholars 'ex silentio' as being by Leonardo, possibly because its magical beauty renders it suspicious. However, even in Leonardo’s most densely pictorial drawings, a few traces of his left-handed parallel hatching often remain visible underneath all the layers of the worked up medium. The Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance whose areas of interest included science and invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography.
