ABOUT THIS PIECE Leonardo da Vinci's The Fetus In The Womb was created in c.1511 and the drawing is in Royal Collection London. The size of the work is 30,3 x 22 cm and is made of black chalk, sanguine, pen, ink wash on paper. The studies correctly depict the human fetus in its proper position inside a dissected uterus. Leonardo depicted the uterus with one chamber, in contrast to theories that the uterus had multiple chambers which many believed divided fetuses into separate compartments in the case of twins. Leonardo also correctly drew the uterine artery and the vascular system of the cervix and vagina. The Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance whose areas of interest included science and invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography.
