ABOUT THIS PIECE Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi was created in circa 1500 and is in Louvre Abu Dhabi. The size of the work is 65,6 x 45,4 cm and is made of oil on panel. The painting depicts Jesus Christ in an anachronistic blue Renaissance dress, making the sign of the cross with his right hand, while holding a transparent, non-refracting crystal orb in his left, signalling his role as Salvator Mundi and representing the 'celestial sphere' of the heavens. Approximately thirty copies and variations of the work by pupils and followers of Leonardo have been identified. The Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance whose areas of interest included science and invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography.
