ABOUT THIS PIECE

Renaissance Painter Leonardo Da Vinci's Allegory with Wolf and Eagle was created in 1516 and the drawing is in Royal Collection London. The original size of the work is 17 x 28 cm and is made of pen and red chalk on paper.

This is Leonardo’s most highly finished chalk drawing, though its purpose is unknown, and the allegorical subject has received many different interpretations. The glorious eagle bestriding the earth wears a French crown with fleurs-de-lys, and must stand for the King of France; the animal in the boat is sometimes seen as a wolf representing the Pope, guiding the ‘ship of the Church’ (navis ecclesiae) with a tree for a mast.

The Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance whose areas of interest included science and invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography.
