ABOUT THIS PIECE John James Audubon's Washington Sea Eagle was created in 1836 - 1839 and is in Smithsonian American Art Museum Washington D.C. The size of the work is 116,8 x 84,5 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Audubon made sure this painting of the "Bird of Washington" conveyed the General and President's commanding presence. In its pose and demeanor, the immense raptor resembles a formal portrait of a leader, seen in profile, gazing out into the distance. The painting eventually came into the collection of the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, S. Dillon Ripley, whose family made it a gift to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Artist: John James Audubon (1785 - 1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats.
