ABOUT THE WORK Renaissance Painter Jan Gossaert's Neptune and Amphitrite was created in 1516 and the painting is in Gemaldegalerie Berlin. The original size of the work is 191 x 128,4 cm and is made of oil on wood. It shows Neptune tenderly embracing his wife Amphitrite. In his right hand, the God holds the trident with which he unleashed storms at sea and summoned earthquakes. Gossart quite effectively frames the heroic nude forms of the divine couple with an architectural setting consisting of Doric columns, reddish-brown pilasters, and a grey entablature. The rear terminus of the room, which encloses the pair like a sanctuary, is formed by a curtain, beneath which a strip of whitish-blue ocean is visible. Some of the architectural details are the result of the study of real buildings, others are derived from literary sources. The water at the feet of the divine couple is more than an allusion to Neptune in his element, and also recalls the display of celebrated cult statues in antiquity as described by Pausanias. The bucrani (ox skulls) displayed above on the entablature is based on a decorative motif that recreates the skulls of sacrificial animals which served as embellishments on altars and temples. Associated as well with the realistic rendering of the skulls is a reference to the Neptunalia, the festivities in honour of Neptune that took place in Rome, and at which it was customary to sacrifice bulls. The Artist: Jan Gossaert (1478 - 1532) was a French-speaking painter from the Low Countries also known as Jan Mabuse as he called himself when he matriculated in the Guild of Saint Luke, at Antwerp, in 1503.
