ABOUT THIS PIECE Jan Asselijn's The Breach of the Saint Anthony’s Dike near Amsterdam was created in 1651 and is in Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The size of the work is 85,5 x 108,2 cm and is made of oil on canvas. During the night of 4-5 March 1651 the Saint Anthony’s Dike was breached near Amsterdam. Jan Asselijn portrayed the fiercely flowing water with a strong sense of drama. The billowing cloak of the man at the left shows that the storm is not yet over, however the squalls are already moving on at the right. The vivid red contrasts sharply with the bright blue of the parting clouds. The Artist: Jan Asselijn (c.1610 - 1652), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He was one of the first Dutch painters who introduced a fresh and clear manner of painting landscapes in the style of Claude Lorraine, and his example was speedily followed by other artists.
