ABOUT THIS PIECE Jan Asselijn's A Coastal Ruin in Italy was created between 1640 - 1652 and is in Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The size of the work is 54,5 x 48 cm and is made of oil on panel. A favourite motif of the Italianates was a small harbour on the Mediterranean Sea with a crumbling quay and a ruin. At right are an African man and a couple of Turkish traders. At the left, a man in northern European clothing gestures out to sea. Overseas trade stimulated an interest for such scenes among Dutch collectors, even though the views were imaginary. The Artist: Jan Asselijn (c.1610 - 1652), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He was one of the first Dutch painters who introduced a fresh and clear manner of painting landscapes in the style of Claude Lorraine, and his example was speedily followed by other artists.
