ABOUT THIS PIECE Jacques-Louis David's The Coronation of Napoleon and Coronation of the Empress Josephine in Notre-Dame de Paris, December 2, 1804 was created in 1807 and the painting is in Musée du Louvre, Paris. The original size of the work is 621 x 979 cm and is made of oil on canvas. The composition is organized around several axes, and incorporates the rules of neoclassicism. One axis is that which passes through the cross and has a vertical orientation. A diagonal line runs from the pope to the empress. All eyes are turned towards Napoleon, who is the center of the composition. The Artist: Jacques-Louis David (1748 – 1825) was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity and severity and heightened feeling, harmonizing with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
