ABOUT THE WORK Renaissance Painter Hans Baldung Grien's Two Witches was created in 1523 and the painting is in Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt. The size of the work is 65,4 x 46 cm and is made of mixed technic on wood. These two naked women are in league with the devil. The threatening clouds of smoke in the background don't seem to impress the witches in the slightest, as they present themselves in provocative poses. The dragon creature enclosed in the jar, however, does not represent Satan, as one might think: It symbolizes mercury, which was used in medicinal ointments to treat syphilis, which had been rampant in Europe since 1495. What the witches are trying to tell us is: those who don't resist the women's challenging gaze risk becoming infected with the disease. Little Cupid gazes in horror at the disaster for which he feels partly responsible. The Artist: Hans Baldung Grien (1484 - 1545) was a German artist in painting and printmaking who was considered the most gifted student of Albrecht Dürer.
