ABOUT THE WORK

The Three Stages of Life and Death by Hans Baldung Grien was created in 1510 and is in Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien. The size of the work is 48,2 x 32,8 cm and is made of oil on wood. Death holds the running hourglass menacingly over the head of the young woman, who is lost in her own reflection. The old woman on the left is barely managing to hold Death back. Death is already reaching for the veil of youth, behind which – on the other side – a boy is hiding. He can scarcely yet envisage the course of life and its inevitable end. The Artist: Hans Baldung Grien (1484 - 1545) was a German artist in painting and printmaking who was considered the most gifted student of Albrecht Dürer. Art Movement: Renaissance The Theme of the Work: Faith Culture
