ABOUT THIS PIECE Gustave Courbet's The Trellis was created in 1862 and the painting is in Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. The original size of the work is 110 x 135 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Summer flowers are the heart of this painting. Full-blown, they surge across the surface, engulfing the young woman whose dress is even printed with miniature flowers. Gustave Courbet, famous at the time for his confrontational images of peasant life and dramatic landscapes (see Landscape Near Ornans in this gallery), led a personal campaign to reform art. He declared that artists must represent contemporary life, not imitate the past. The Artist: Gustave Courbet (1819 –1877) was a French painter who led the Realism movement in 19th-century French painting. Committed to painting only what he could see, he rejected academic convention and the Romanticism of the previous generation of visual artists.
