ABOUT THE WORK

Water Snakes by Gustav Klimt was created in 1904 - 1907 and is in Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. The size of the work is 50 x 20 cm and is made of watercolor, gouache and pen on pergament. The creatures Klimt called "water serpents" or "mermaids" appear fairytale-like, detached from reality. They float in dreamily flowing motion amidst golden seaweed above the seabed. From the lower right of the painting, a shimmering fish gazes back at us with a fixed eye. Inspired by the Symbolist art movement, the artist uses these underwater beings to symbolize a mystical world. Klimt created the work on parchment at the height of his so-called Golden Period. The Artist: Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objet d'art. Art Movement: Symbolism The Theme of the Work: Female Nude
