ABOUT THE WORK

Beech Forest by Gustav Klimt was created in 1902 and is in Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister Dresden. The size of the work is 100 x 100 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Gustav Klimt, whose portraits of women are exemplary of Secessionist Vienna at the turn of the 20th century, came to landscape painting relatively late. During his summer stays in Seewalchen am Attersee from 1898 onwards, he also painted, according to his own account, a "small beech forest (in sunshine) interspersed with some conifers." The artist constructed a viewfinder with a square opening from cardboard and positioned it in front of his eye so that the sky and horizon were almost entirely obscured. The Artist: Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals and sketches.
