ABOUT THIS PIECE Giovanni Boldini's Crossing The Street was created in 1873 - 1875 and is in Clark Art Institute Williamstown. The size of the work is 46,2 x 37,8 cm and is made of oil on panel. Boldini’s view of a busy street captures the rapid pace of city life in Paris. As figures hurry along in different directions, an elegantly dressed—and unaccompanied—woman crosses the cobbled street, attracting the attention of a man in a carriage. In her haste, she has raised her skirt and exposed her petticoat, adding to her allure. The painting is dated twice, perhaps indicating that the artist finished or reworked it two years after he began. The Artist: Giovanni Boldini (1842 - 1931) was an Italian genre and portrait painter who lived and worked in Paris for most of his career. According to a 1933 article in Time magazine, he was known as the "Master of Swish" because of his flowing style of painting.
