ABOUT THE WORK Giovanni Andrea Vavassore's Map of Constantinople was created in ca. 1520 - 1540 and is in Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nurnberg. The original size of the work is 37,5 x 51,4 cm and is made of printing on woodcut. Vavassore's map from 1520/40 (based on lost drawings from around 1479), republished in "Civitates orbis terrarum" by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg. This printed work comprises over 600 realistic cityscapes and city plans with a total of approximately 1,600 pages. They were published in six volumes between 1572 and 1618 and depicted all major cities in Europe, Africa, Asia, and even the Americas. Georg Braun, a theologian, served as publisher. Frans Hogenberg was the engraver for the first four volumes. The fifth and sixth volumes were created by Simon van den Neuwel (also known as Novellanus). The Artist: Giovanni Andrea Vavassore (1518 - 1572) is a Venetian engraver, cartographer, print maker, and publisher/printer.
