ABOUT THIS PIECE Frederic Edwin Church's Autumn was created in 1875 and the painting is in Thyssen Bornemisza Museum Madrid. The original size of the work is 39,4 x 61 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Autumn depicts a bend in the river with the changing hues of the season. A warm, misty background light suffuses the entire scene, which is framed by a large tree on the left and a single rock on the right bank. The vegetation that covers the rocks and tree trunks ranges in tone from green to red and is reflected in the waters of the river. The painting was probably commissioned by William Henry Osborn, a friend and collector of Church’s work who shared the artist’s fascination with nature. The Artist: Frederic Edwin Church (1826 – 1900) was an American landscape painter born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters, best known for painting large landscapes, often depicting mountains, waterfalls, and sunsets.
