ABOUT THE WORK Franz Marc's Dog Lying in the Snow was created in 1911 and is in Stadelsches Kunstinstitut Frankfurt. The original size of the work is 62,5 x 105 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Animals are at the heart of Franz Marc's paintings. For him, they embodied a primordial state of harmonious unity with creation. He often depicted them lying on the ground, asleep, to illustrate their pure and peaceful nature. This painting shows his own dog, Russi, a white German Shepherd mix. It marks a stylistic shift away from lifelike reproduction and toward experimentation with color and form. Here, he was particularly interested in how the perception of the white tones in the fur changes against the equally white blanket of snow, and how the colors influence each other. He stylized the dog's form, drawing on the angular forms of the Cubists that Marc had previously seen in exhibitions. The Artist: Franz Marc (1880 – 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.
