ABOUT THE WORK Franz Marc's Deer in the Woods II was created in 1914 and the painting is in Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. The original size of the work is 110,5 x 100 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In 1914, Franz Marc painted "Deer in the Forest II." What we see here is not a reproduction of an observation of nature, but a constructed image with a quasi-sacred aura, which suggests the artist's intention: Marc had nothing less in mind than to make the essence of nature and animals tangible through his art. The artist died in 1916 in the First World War – "Deer in the Forest II" is thus one of his last major paintings. Roebuck, doe, and fawn are integrated into a stable triangular composition, in which each animal is assigned its own color. The result is a harmonious and solemn triad of the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. It is surrounded by the green of the forest vegetation in many different fresh and saturated nuances and shades. The resting animals appear to gaze at one another. They fit tectonically abstracted into their natural environment as part of a crystalline formal framework that solidifies the pictorial architecture. Marc intertwines figure and ground, creating the impression of the interpenetration and transparency of the physical, of a merging of the creature with its environment. Influenced by Delaunay's "Orphism," Marc's painting also recalls the chromatic intensity of sacred stained glass windows. Marc also references religious models in terms of motifs, translating the motif of the Holy Family into his own language of the creaturely. The Artist: Franz Marc (1880 – 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.
