ABOUT THIS PIECE François Boucher's The Love Letter was created in 1750 and is in National Gallery of Art Washington D.C. The size of the work is 81,2 x 75,2 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In a lush and verdant garden or wooded countryside, two young women recline at the base of a stone pillar surmounted by a carved lion. One ties an envelope around the neck of a pigeon with a blue ribbon while looking with admiration at her companion. The sheep that lounge about and the dog standing sentry tell us that these are shepherdesses, but like many such characters of Boucher’s they pay little attention to their responsibilities, preferring to idle the day away gathering flowers in a straw basket and sending missives via carrier pigeon. The Artist: François Boucher (1703 - 1770) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher, who worked in the Rococo style. Boucher is known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories, and pastoral scenes.
