ABOUT THIS PIECE Eugene de Blaas' The Flirtation was created in 1931 and is in private collection. The size of the work is 100 x 62 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In the present work, a playfully romantic interlude unfolds as a young man pulls himself up, over a brick wall, whilst leaning in for a kiss. Meanwhile, his paramour’s eyes are cast towards the viewer, with a playful smile quietly acknowledging his advances. Through the use of a distinctly Italianate setting, and the detailed, beautifully coloured costumes of his figures, Von Blaas is able to create a rich contextual setting for the viewer. Yet, whilst these details, coupled with the artist's tight figural composition, set the scene, it is the postures, lively gestures, facial expressions and the delicate emotive language which fully animate the world that Von Blaas has created. One can almost hear the conversation of the two lovers. This vibrant depiction allows the viewer to formulate and project his own narrative onto this simple exchange, frozen in time. The Artist: Eugene de Blaas (1843 – 1932) was an Italian painter in the school known as Academic Classicism. His father Karl, also a painter, was his teacher. The family moved to Venice when Karl became Professor at the Academy of Venice.
