ABOUT THIS PIECE Eugene de Blaas' A Good Catch was created in 1894 and is in private collection. The size of the work is 84,5 x 47,5 cm and is made of oil on panel. Here, a young girl passes by holding the catch of the day. Her beauty is enhanced by the lace-ornate blouse and the light curls framing her face, while the lobster in the basket can be read as a symbol of the harbinger of good fortune or, in this case, of falling in love. The Artist: Eugene de Blaas (1843 – 1932) was an Italian painter in the school known as Academic Classicism. His father Karl, also a painter, was his teacher. The family moved to Venice when Karl became Professor at the Academy of Venice.
