ABOUT THE WORK Edouard Manet's Nana was created in 1877 and is in Hamburger Kunsthalle. The original size of the work is 154 x 115 cm and is made of oil on canvas. n the central axis, the prostitute Nana stands, almost life-size, in a petticoat and corset, elegant stockings, and fashionable shoes. She is busy applying her makeup in front of a mirror, affectingly displaying her powder puff and lipstick with her little finger extended. Behind her back, her next customer, dressed in a suit and top hat, waits for her on the sofa, ready to go out. His figure is cut off by the edge of the picture, and he must share her attention, for Nana is flirting with a third party: from within the picture, she gazes at her viewers, drawing them into the scene as complicit. Nana was rejected by the official Salon because the time was not ripe for the openly flourishing prostitution in society to be ennobled in art. Hardly less shocking for the public was Manet's new, Impressionistic style of painting, which abandoned all illusion of depth and openly displayed the texture of the painted surface, thus contradicting all the rules of academic painting. The Artist: Edouard Manet (1832 - 1883) was a French modernist painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.
