ABOUT THE WORK Edouard Manet's Claude Monet Painting In His Studio was created in 1874 and is in Neue Pinakothek Munchen. The original size of the work is 82,7 x 105 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Manet painted this picture in the bright light of a sunny summer day and depicted Monet at work on board his small boat. Apparently by chance, his gaze takes in the boat, his friend and his wife, the shimmering water, the shore, the boats, and a strip of sky in a delicate blue – so loose, so sketchy is his painting style. This loose brushstroke, combined with the bright light, the luminous colors, and the curved shape of the boat with its awning, gives the picture a cheerful character, which the subject, in his summer clothing, also shares. Manet, a portrayal of people, is also able to convey Monet's concentration while painting by showing him in full profile against the blue background of the cabin wall, concentrating on his work. In that summer of 1874, several of the Impressionists gathered in Argenteuil, including Gustave Caillebotte, Alfred Sisley, and Auguste Renoir. In 1871, Manet hosted Claude Monet, whom he occasionally supported financially, in the small town on the Seine north of Paris. In 1874, he visited him several times from Gennevilliers, on the other bank of the Seine; he also painted the Monet family in their garden at the same time as Renoir. The Artist: Edouard Manet (1832 - 1883) was a French modernist painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.
