ABOUT THIS PIECE Baroque Painter Dirck van Baburen's The Concert was created in 1623 and the painting is in Detroit Institute of Arts. The original size of the work is 105,4 x 133,3 cm cm and is made of oil on canvas. In The Concert, Baburen presents a ragtag group. Their costumes and instruments range from historic to contemporary, and the woman’s gesture of crowning the robe-clad lutenist with a floral wreath may indicate that they are a performance troupe joined by an elegant gentleman. The light that streams in from the left shimmers on his silken sleeves and the polished wood of his violin, highlighting, as well, the flushed faces of the other spirited musicians. The Artist: Dirck van Baburen (c. 1595- 1624) was a Dutch painter and one of the Utrecht Caravaggisti. The Utrecht works made between 1621 as 1624, the final years of Baburen's career, merged the visual characteristics learnt from Caravaggio and Manfredi into genre, mythological and history painting.
