ABOUT THE WORK

Braiding her Hair by Christian Krohg was created in 1882 and is in National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design Oslo. The size of the work is 56 x 49 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In such portraits of family life, Krohg found universal topics that transcended social class and that would therefore appeal to a broad audience. Characteristic of his familial paintings is their focus on the small, everyday moments of intimacy and care: a grandfather rocking the cradle, a nursing mother, a mother reading to her children, or as in this painting, a mother braiding the hair of her little daughter. The Artist: Christian Krohg (1852 - 1925) was a Norwegian naturalist painter, illustrator, author and journalist. Krohg was inspired by the realism art movement and often chose motives from everyday life. He was the director and served as the first professor at the Norwegian Academy of Arts from 1909 to 1925.
