ABOUT THIS PIECE Barbizon School Painter Charles Francois Daubigny's Boats on the Seacoast at Etaples was created in 1871 and the painting is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The original size of the work is 34,3 x 58,1 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In October 1870 Daubigny and his family went to London to seek refuge from the Franco-Prussian War; this scene of beached fishing boats is thought to be the first painting he signed and dated upon his return to France in June 1871. The subject is one he had helped to popularize in the prior decade, when vanguard artists including Courbet, Jongkind, Whistler, Corot, and the young Monet also worked on the Channel coast. The Artist: Charles-François Daubigny (1817 – 1878) was one of the painters of the Barbizon school, and is considered an important precursor of impressionism.
