ABOUT THE WORK Caspar David Friedrich's Moonrise Over The Sea was created in 1822 and the painting is in Nationalgalerie Berlin. The original size of the work is 55 x 71 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Friedrich painted "Moonrise at Sea" as an evening scene. Silvery reflections of the night sky glow on the dark surface of the water. The disk of the full moon is half-hidden behind the banks of clouds above the horizon, its light breaking through as if through a cloud gate. Two women and a man have settled on boulders on the shore and gaze at the moon and across the sea, into the seemingly boundless distance, toward the two sailing ships. Their dark silhouettes rhythmically emanate from the light surfaces of the sea and sky. In executing the three figures, Friedrich used outline drawings on tracing paper to underline the painting, a technique he also used for other paintings. The painting exudes a comforting mood, conveyed by the three figures united in community and the returning ships. At the same time, the immensity of the universe is palpable in the vastness of the sky and horizon. While the morning painting "The Lonely Tree" predominates in the turn to earthly life, the evening painting presents the natural spectacle with the moon as a sign of hope in unearthly beauty, awakening longings and leading the mind to premonitions. The Artist: Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation.
