ABOUT THIS PIECE Romantic Painter Caspar David Friedrich's Meadows near Greifswald was created in 1821 - 1822 and the painting is in Hamburger Kunsthalle. The original size of the work is 34,5 x 48,3 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Even today, west of the city of Greifswald, you can still visit the spot from which Frederick depicted the silhouette of his hometown – albeit with some idealizations. The towers of St. Mary's Church, St. Nicholas Cathedral, and St. James's Cathedral are clearly visible, as are the turrets of the town hall. As with many of his works, the painter was able to draw on a precise drawing that he probably made on site around 1806. However, the painting does not limit itself to faithfully depicting the distant view of the city. Rather, it places Greifswald at the center of a strikingly symmetrical composition. Situated directly on the horizon, the city, remote from the haze, marks the transition from the tranquil, lush green landscape to the cloudless, light-filled sky. In this way, two fundamentally different spatial experiences are mirrored: the presence of the meadows with the horses, accessible to us and whose distance from the city is clearly definable, is answered by the immeasurable expanse of the sky, which transcends the here and now. The Artist: Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation.
