ABOUT THE WORK Carl Spitzweg's Der Arme Poet (The Poor Poet) was created in 1839 and is in Neue Pinakothek München. The size of the work is 36,2 x 44,6 cm and is made of oil on canvas. No other painting by Spitzweg enjoys as much popularity today as the "Poor Poet." Spitzweg has prototypically portrayed the cliché of the poet who focuses solely on the spiritual, unconcerned with material appearances: Lying on a mattress in a shabby attic room, equipped against the cold with a blanket, a worn jacket, and a nightcap, and protected from the rain with an umbrella, the poet appears to be devoting himself entirely to the elaboration of a poem, undeterred by the adverse external conditions. When the painting was presented to the public at the Munich Art Association in 1839, however, it met with criticism for its ironic depiction of the impoverished poet. The painting was seen as an attack on the ideality of poetry and, at the same time, as an attack on idealizing art per se, as represented primarily by academic history painting. The Artist: Carl Spitzweg (1808 - 1885) was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre subjects. Spitzweg was self-taught as an artist, starting out by copying the works of Flemish masters. He contributed his first work to satiric magazines. Later, Spitzweg visited European art centers in Prague, Venice, Paris, London, and Belgium studying the works of various artists and refining his technique and style.
