ABOUT THE WORK Camille Pissarro's The Little Bridge Pontoise was created in 1875 and is in Kunsthalle Mannheim. The size of the work is 65,5 x 81,5 cm and is made of oil on canvas. "The Little Bridge, Pontoise" dates back to one of Camille Pissarro's most important phases. In 1874, he participated in the first group exhibition of the Impressionists in Paris with five paintings, for which the term "Impressionism" was coined – by a dismissive critic. Furthermore, from 1872 onward, Pissarro also worked intensively with Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), who lived in the immediate vicinity of Pontoise. Both artists influenced each other and began to experiment with their landscape depictions. Pissarro's painting, for example, is characterized by intense green tones and a much richer palette than he used in the 1860s. The dense foliage obscures most of the sky and surrounds the sandy-colored bridge in the center of the picture. Using a palette knife, Pissarro creates reflections on the water's surface, thereby giving it a more two-dimensional character. He stages the play of light, which emphasizes the fleeting nature of sensory impressions, through an interweaving of different shades of green, which he blends in a variety of ways across the entire picture surface. The Artist: Camille Pissarro (1830 - 1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
