ABOUT THIS PIECE Baroque Painter Balthasar van der Ast's Flowers in a Wan Li Vase with Shells was created in 1640 - 1649 and the painting is in Mauritshuis den Haag. The original size of the work is 53 x 43 cm and is made of oil on panel. Van der Ast introduced a number of important innovations into flower still-lifes. This bouquet is painted much more freely than those of his predecessors, and is restricted to just a few types of flower. This makes it easier to imagine that this elegant bouquet actually existed. The flowers exude an air of exclusivity, which is reinforced by the costly vase of Chinese porcelain and the collection of exotic shells. The Artist: Balthasar van der Ast (1593/94 – 7 March 1657) was a Dutch Golden Age painter who specialized in still lifes of flowers and fruit, as well as painting a number of remarkable shell still lifes; he is considered to be a pioneer in the genre of shell painting.
